The SEC Championship: The Elite of the Elite

Hey college football fans! It’s been a crazy week for me, but it is about to get even crazier Saturday at 4 p.m., as No. 1 Florida battles No. 2 Alabama for a spot in the most prestigious game, the national title game.

I’m not sure how this weekend will top rivalry weekend, but I have a gut feeling that it will. Both of these teams are undefeated, but not all of their wins came easily.

For the Gators, they had tough away games against Mississippi State and South Carolina and a last second win against Arkansas thanks to a field goal at the end of the game. As for the Crimson Tide, they have learned how to come from behind and get the job finished in the most crucial last minutes. Mount Cody blocked his second field goal of the game against Tennessee for the win, and McElroy had an amazing drive in the 4th quarter to defeat Auburn for a year’s worth of bragging rights.
But ultimately, a win is a win. And for these two teams, winning is all they have experienced this season.

Which leads us to this game.

McElroy has proven that he can be a dependable passer, which will be needed in this game considering Ingram bruised his hip last weekend. While Saban and teammates insist he is 100 percent, I’m still not convinced that you can be 100 percent healthy only a week after an injury. Also, Florida’s defense is going to be a little bit tougher of a challenge to run against, compared to an Auburn team that still held Ingram to a measly 30 yards rushing. Lucky for McElroy, he has wide receiver Julio Jones as a weapon, but matchup wise, Jones will be facing Florida cornerback Joe Haden who will be able to prevent him from making the catches he
needs.

Along with Haden and Florida’s amazing defense, they have a player on the other side of the football that you MIGHT have heard mentioned before. ..Tim Tebow.
He has completed 66 percent of his passes this season, thrown for 17 touchdowns and then ran for 13! He also dominates in the red zone, which will be key in this game.

Bama has to play much better than they did against Auburn last weekend. With Florida’s Carlos Dunlap sitting out, Bama will have an advantage, but not a big enough advantage to beat Florida. Even if Mount Cody and the Bama defense put pressure on Tebow, he can still run!

Winning championships and big games for Tebow and the Gators is about as routine as brushing your teeth is for the rest of us.

I’ve got to pick last year’s champions, the Gators!

Enjoy the games!

CFB Rivalry Week

Hey college football fans! Thanksgiving day has arrived, and I have so many things in my life to be thankful for, including some of the amazing games this weekend. What could possibly go better with turkey and cornbread dressing than the greatest rivalries in college football? Absolutely nothing! OK, I take that back. An Iron Bowl upset would be nice.

Starting tonight at 8 p.m. on ESPN, the third-ranked Texas Longhorns face the (6-3) Aggies in College Station. This is a rivalry that I have watched since I was a little girl. With the game taking place 45 minutes from my family’s house, Thanksgiving will be cut a little short this year.

Colt McCoy has only defeated the Aggies once in his entire time at Texas, but this year with the highest completion percentage in the nation he looks to be a tough challenge for an Aggie defense that is ranked 110th in pass defense.
With McCoy still trying to prove that he is Heisman-worthy, this game will not even be close.

Sorry Cousin Joe, Hook’em Horns!

Friday night at 7 p.m. on ESPN2, No. 9 Pitt travels to Morgantown to face a Mountaineer team that is undefeated at home. This intense rivalry is anyone’s game! For my family, just about every Thanksgiving would end in a backyard brawl with all of the cousins. Even though someone would end up crying and someone else would end up bleeding, our games were nothing compared to this rivalry.

There has been lots of talk about Pitt’s balanced offense with quarterback Bill Stull, who possesses a QB rating just shy of 160, and Big East leading rusher Dion Lewis.

But, the Mountaineers are still seeking revenge from 2007, when the loss to Pitt kept them out of the national title game. If there is one team that could possibly upset Pitt, it’s tailback Noel Devine and West Virginia. AccuScore projections agree that this will be a close one. I’m picking the Mountaineers to continue their home winning streak.

Following the Pittsburgh at West Virginia game, the No. 6 ranked Boise State Broncos take on (8-3) Nevada with the WAC title on the line. Both teams are undefeated in conference play. A win against Nevada would work in the Broncos favor, when it comes to convincing BCS voters. This win won’t come easy though. Nevada has averaged 55.6 points in its past five games, largely due to the running game. Last week alone, they ran for 574 yards and are ranked No.1 in the country for rushing yards and points scored.

Even though this will be a tough match, I still think Boise State will manage to pull out the win because of quarterback Kellen Moore, who has amazingly thrown for 33 touchdowns and only 3 interceptions.

Saturday at 12 p.m. on ESPN, No. 18 Clemson faces (6-5) South Carolina at Williams-Brice Stadium. In this in-state rivalry, Clemson has won 24 of the last 33 times they have played. This season, the Tigers offense is averaging 41 points over the past 6 games, all of which were wins. Not to mention South Carolina is notorious for starting out the season hot, and then slowly letting the flame burn out.

Clemson wins easily against a USC team that has lost the last 4 out of 5 games.

And finally, I have saved the best game for last. A year minus three days from today, at approximately this exact time, a rain-soaked blond reporter stood on the Alabama sideline next to John Parker Wilson and the rest of the Crimson Tide team and watched as the Auburn Tigers proceeded to fumble the ball back to back to back. It was only then that the Tigers six game winning streak was swept away by the Tide, and I promised myself next year would be different.

Well, here we are again, less than 24 hours from kick-off. Myself, about to give my famous advice and plan of attack to the Auburn quarterback, and him on the other end of the line rolling his eyes. That I am almost certain of.

If there is one game you watch all weekend, make it this one. Now, I may be a little biased. But if you don’t believe me, will you at least believe the L.A. Times?

Friday at 2:30 p.m. on CBS, the No. 2 ranked Crimson Tide travel to the loveliest village on the plains to play the (7-4) Auburn Tigers at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

This game is simple:
1.) Can Auburn’s defense hold Heisman candidate Mark Ingram to under 100 yards rushing?
2.) Can Auburn put points on the board, with the help of tailback Ben Tate, against Alabama’s defense that is one of the best in the country?

What do you guys think? Enjoy all of your blessings and have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

CFB Week 12

Hey college football fans! It’s almost Saturday again, and you know what that means…time to kick back and get ready for kickoff.

At 3:30 p.m., the 8th ranked LSU Tigers face the (7-3) Ole Miss Rebels in Oxford, Miss.

Both teams are looking to end their season on a good note, despite both LSU and Ole Miss being eliminated from the SEC Championship race.

Quarterback Jarrett Lee only completed 7 of 22 passes for 105 yards last week against LA Tech. And while it is still unknown if Lee or Jordan Jefferson will start since spraining his right ankle, the Ole Miss team is prepared for either.

With Dexter McCluster posting 282 rushing yards and 324 all-purpose yards last weekend against Tennessee, he has become Snead’s most explosive weapon and will be a challenge for LSU.

Upset Alert: Ole Miss is (5-1) at home and has some serious momentum coming off the win against Tennessee. If Lee starts for LSU, this could be a tough game for the Tigers to win. After watching the way LSU played against LA Tech last weekend and talking to LA Tech quarterback Ross Jenkins who told me, “If the Ole Miss offensive line can control the line of scrimmage, then the Rebels should have a very good chance of moving the ball effectively,” I’m picking Ole Miss to upset LSU.

Next at 7:30 p.m., No. 25 ranked Cal goes into Stanford Stadium to take on a Stanford team who has put up 106 points on the board against Oregon and USC the past two weeks.

Cal’s star tailback Jahvid Best is out this weekend, still recovering from his scary second concussion, but hopes to return to the field Dec. 5 against Washington. Cal will have more difficulty controlling the clock.

Houston native quarterback Andrew Luck, who has thrown for over 2,200 yards this season, and leading Pac-10 rusher Toby Gerhart, look to give Stanford the advantage they need.

I’m taking Stanford by at least two touchdowns in this one.
At 7:45 p.m., (6-5) Kansas State travels to Memorial Stadium to face the (7-3) Cornhuskers.

While Kansas State is coming off of last weekend’s loss to OU, the Cornhuskers had a much different outcome when facing the Sooners.

Kansas State is (1-4) on the road, and quarterback Grant Gregory has thrown for only 4 touchdowns, and 3 interceptions this season. However, since Daniel Thomas made the transition from quarterback to tailback this year, he has become the highlight of KSU’s offense and one of the best in the Big 12 with 228 carries for 1166 yards and 11 touchdowns.

The key to this game will be Nebraska’s defense. With Ndamukong Suh and Jared Crick controlling the middle, Thomas will have difficulty gaining yards and putting points on the board.

Finally, Saturday night at 8 p.m. on ABC, we have a must-see game when the 11th ranked Oregon ducks take on (6-3) Arizona.

Arizona has yet to lose a game at home, but Oregon’s LaMichael James and powerful dual-threat quarterback Jeremiah Masoli may give the Wildcats their first.
With the Rose Bowl on the line, this game will be a close one.

Who do you guys think will win? Oregon with the nation’s sixth-best ground attack or Arizona with the 20th-ranked rushing defense?

Let me know your thoughts and enjoy the games this weekend.

Love always, Lindsay
